Rule 5 Draft Notables

Curt Garcia taken by the St Louis Smoke will be able to get the lefies out but will have some trouble with the righties. He has a decent sinker paired with a halfway decent curveball and change-up. If he can have a good coach with some patience and discipline he has a chance to be a good find. The Smoke's pen coach looks like he has the patience but his discipline is suspect.

Syracuse found themselves a gem when they drafted Willie DeSoto. He will be a terror on the basepaths when he gets on which indeed he will be doing vs righties. He's not a bad OF and perhaps can fill in at 2B to spell the starter. In syllogist fashion his major premise will be getting on base and his minor premise will be advancing on the base.

Julian Valenzuela has a chance to be a workhorse but will have to surmount his shortcomings in the pitch department. Hitters might get easily acquainted with his pitches, specially if they sit on the knucklecurve which figures to be his only good pitch.

Lloyd Griffith has a blazing curveball as funny as that sounds. He more than likely should be used as a LHS since he can only go 10 pitches per outing. If its vs lefties though they will be a good 10 pitches.

Kevin Morgan - See Julian Valenzuela above except with more homers(lots).

Derek Linton - See Willie DeSoto above(SYR) except vs lefties and more balls put into play.

Zip Sheldon projects to be a 40 HR and will be lucky to stay above the .250 mark. Either way a switch hitter who will be less vulnerable vs righties and will certainly drive in a lot of runs.

Benji Perez was taken midway through the 2nd round. A utility guy who can fill in at second and steal you some bases.

Junior DeSoto a RP hartford didn't protect goes to Salem. He will be dominant vs righties and has 3 decent movement pitches. A sinker, slider and curveball. He will need to work on throwing strikes though.

The project continues in Pittsburgh when they draft Jose Velazquez who has good 1-2 punch FB and curve. He doesn't discriminate, he likes facing righties just as much as lefties and has great velocity but will probably put more base runners on than desired.

The drafting of Philip Blackwell created a light Buzz in Salt Lake City. If he can reach his potential he will work wonders with the glove and should only be platooned versus left-handed pitching.

Looks like high contact hitters that can blaze the basepaths is the flavor of the year in season 6. With the taking of Richard McCarthy San Jose found themselves an all around player who will put the ball in play and can field the second base position. As wll as stealing you 40+ bases a year he looks to be a healthy guy but with that makeup may not reach his defensive potential.

We round out the draft with 3 more picks from Pittsburgh. Chili Smith a singles-master who will be mainly used versus righties and will add to the teams SB total. Hmmm sound familiar. This guy has Ozzie Guillen strength and SO ratio(o HR, 13/1 SO/AB(the latter is awesome). In tune with the economy and the best name in the draft Les House is a great addition to the battery. He will definitely keep the teams E.R.A low and will
pounce on lefties. With the final pick of the draft Pittsburgh picked up a backup SS in Olmedo Zapata.

Rule 5 Draft Winner: The Pittsburgh "Rule 5 guys" I mean Project. 5 noteworthy additions. I only have one suggestion for the Pittsburgh coaching staff. Get House, Smith and specially Zapata on a strength training program, maybe start them on something light, like 5-lb dumbbells. They already made a side-bet
the last guy to hit it out of the infield has to pay for dinner.

Honorable mention: San Jose

Rule 5 Draft Loser: Salem lost 6 players, including a few which could have lengthy ML careers.

The Winter Meeting Shuffle

Big Trades so far

The third most prolific hitter and DP artist Santiago Perez has been traded to San Juan in exchange for slgger 3B Willie Gutierrez, a young slugging Dave Cepicky who has the deadly high-power, high-eye combo and control specialist Ben Malone who features a blazing fastball along with a decent hammer and a serviceable change-up.

Pittsburgh stays busy trading when they fetch 19 year old phenom "Double Pete" Peter Peterson, possible closer or at worst good setup man Octavio Flores and a future No. 3 SP in Alex Seanez. They also get Victor Martinez who can throw the cheese. Durham gets Teddy Ward who is a year or 2 away from the show. Ward features just about as good of a split FB as you can find to go along with a good 4 seamer and 3 other serviceable pitches. The Tobacco Leafs also get veteran Erik Field who is 3rd all-time in E.R.A. Field has long been a target of Durham management and they finally got their hands on him. At 37 albeit, but Mr. Field says he has a couple years left in him and hopes to end his career as a Leaf.

San Juan continued their addition of superstars by adding 2-time MVP Alan Thompson. They coughed up prospect Gerardo Mateo who is questionable vs righties but has good movement on his FB. They also sent over highly touted IFA Scooter Scott and a pretty good defensive catcher who is all splits. Not a bad price to pay for a guy that has a great chance of adding to that MVP total at a ripe age of 26.

Durham trades another young player in Hank Swift who figures to hit 40+ HR's and a high average. 1B slugging Quinton Brooks was also included in the package. Both are ready to contribute at the ML level. Theodore Smith is what Durham recieved in return. At 19 he is still years away from sniffing the bigs but when he arrives he should be well worth the wait. He looks to be dominant vs righties and hold his own vs lefties. A high control guy who doesn't have a standout pitch but can get you out with a good mix of movement pitches: sinker, slider and curve. He can also get you by changing speeds on you with a 4 seamer and decent change-up.

In a big 1-for-1 trade Toledo sent stud prospet Jumbo Almanza who is going to kill righties. Jumbo is a very durable guy with high stamina that can continually give you 110-120 pitches per start. In return they get season 4 ROY and 3-time all-star Gerald Li who is good for 30 doubles, 30 HR and 100+ RBI's to go with a .300 average.

1 on 1 With San Juan GM Goldie

Goldie is a founding member of the world and I got a chance to check in with him on Hartford, winning his first HBD title and which prospect he would like to have on his team.

1. How did you discover HBD?

I'm not really sure where I heard about WhatIfSports. Maybe it was an add on ESPN.com and I'd heard some simulation talk about whether the Red Sox would beat the Yankees in 2003. So, I checked it out and put together a team with Jim Rice/Ozzie Smith/Pedro Martinez/Rickey Henderson. You know; all my favorites but before long I found that I had used the 54 Richie Ashburn, 84 Puckett, 81 Andre Dawson and a couple of cats that I had no idea of who they were so many times I learned to hate them all. Had to have those A+++ fielders. So,I gave it up and used my last credits for HBD which I had heard so much about in the forums. I signed up for the 1st season in Puckett and my crack like addiction came quickly after that. BTW: they were wrong about the 2003 ALCS!

2. You've always had one of the top teams in the NL, what do you think has prevented you from getting to the big one?
I just think my team wasn't that good. This was my first league and had I traded away any player not making the league minimum in season 1. Since then; my team record has improved each season but one. Season 5 was the fist time my team was good enough to really do real damage in the playoffs. Just ran into a tough Durham team.

3. Will this be the season La Ciudad takes the division crown from the Whalers?
Oh, I want it bad. SoxFan is a pain in my ass and he'd better be below me in the standings AFTER game 162. The problem with that is the NL East isn't gonna just be about me beating Hartford. Richmond won 95 games and Boston was over .500 while rebuilding. The NL east averaged over 98 wins per team. So, I can't say for sure I'm taking it but OH.... do I want it.

4. If you could have any player in this world on your team that you don't already have, who would it be?
Tomas Soriano......... wait...... let me think about that........maybe its..... no.......well it could be...... no.......Yeah Soriano. From the day he showed up looking for 19 + mil as a IFA, I have had an unnatural man love for one Tomas Soriano.

5. Do you regret any trades, if so which one would take the cake?
I do regret one trade and one trade only. Some deals you get a little more or less talent... no be deal. In my first HBD season, the owner of a New York team had said they were packing it in and all ML talent was available. I sent some weak offer out with two high stamina AAA pitchers for A.J. Krueger. He took it, the league was pretty pissed, thor was pissed because he sent a bad offer but wasn't as bad as what I sent but I really didn't know how bad I hosed this guy.

6. What's the most important part of a team to you? The power bats? Strong starting pitching? Great bullpen? Speed & defense? Coaching?
You've got to send out starting pitchers that will be over .500 at the end of a season. If you have 5 solid starters you can build an offense and bullpen one piece at a time until you've got a winner. If you have a good offense and bullpen but could be down 7 runs after 5 inning you'll have a looser on your hands.

7. Res Sox, Cards, Mets? You list those as your favorite teams. So which one is your real favorite?
When I was first becoming a huge baseball fan in the mid 80s. The Cardinals were the most fun team in the league. I was a huge Willie McGee, Ozzie Smith, Tommie Herr and Tony Pena fan but I'm done with the Cards now. I'm from Boston and am really a Red Sox fan but after Pedro wasn't resigned in 2005 I've been pulling for the Mets too.

8. You recently won your first HBD Title. How did you feel when you saw that and how does that compare to the 3 Simleague titles you have.
My first Sim championship was big for me because I had made the playoffs in 16 of my first 20 teams (something like that) but no Championship. HBD is more personal for me. When I was playing sim leagues; every championship team had one or more of the same players from the same year. You're in a league with 40 Richie Ashburns on 32 teams. In Dynasty your players are yours and yours alone; making it a more meaningful win. Well unless you're Richie Ashburn.

9. What do you do in your spare time when your not running your HBD teams?
I'm the assistant director for a day-habilitation program that provides services for 38 mentally and physically disables adult. I'm a huge Boston area sports fan with 1/4 season tickets for the Celtics with my live-in girlfriend. I spend quite a bit of time trying to explain to her why my time is better suited checking out "the Cartoon Baseball guys" than watching some romantic comedy. The roll over part of the season is always tough.

10. If you can change one thing about HBD, what would it be and why?
I don't really get into this that much. I leave it to MikeT23 and some of the others that care about it more than I do. I do like the idea of the ratings/projection system not being so cut and dry. Maybe using something like the Baseball America 10 to 80 scouting system. You get a pre-draft ranking from your scouts saying a player projects to be a 70 big-league SS with 40 power, 80 speed and 60 contact. Maybe you get quarterly progress reports on that player each season with possible changes of 80 to 70 speed or that type of thing........ You know what.... this is all BS.... its fine as it is.
